Context
Still a Song of Ascents for pilgrims on the road, where the fierce sun of the day was a genuine threat. The verse pictures God as the shade walking right beside the traveller.
What Does Psalms 121:5 Mean?
Twice in one short line the psalm names God personally yours. The LORD is thy keeper, the LORD is thy shade. A keeper is one who guards and watches; shade is what saves a traveller from the punishing heat of an eastern sun, where a long day on an open road could be dangerous. To call God our shade is to picture Him close enough to fall across us, moving as we move. And He is upon thy right hand, the side a person leaned on, the hand that held the sword and bore the work. God stations Himself exactly there, at the place of our strength and our exposure.
This is nearness through and through. The God who keeps Israel bends close enough to be the shadow at our side, shielding us from what would wear us down. Jesus drew that near when He walked our roads and grew tired in our sun, and nearer still when He stretched out His arms to cover us. The Lord who is our keeper walks beside us, shade against the heat, all the way home, down on the road with us rather than off in a distant watchtower.
In the Original Language
tsel (צֵל), 'shade' -- a sheltering shadow, protection from heat and danger, a picture of God's nearness.
Application
On the days when life feels like a long walk under a relentless sun, this verse reminds us that God is right at our side, as close as our own shadow. He is the shade that moves as we move, near at the very place we feel most exposed. We can walk through the heat of the day knowing our keeper is beside us, down at ground level with us rather than above us in some far-off tower.
