Psalm 90, attributed to Moses, meditates on the brevity of human life against the eternity of God. Verse 12 turns that reflection into a prayer for wisdom.
What Does Psalm 90:12 Mean?
This verse asks God for the wisdom to live well in the light of how short life is. "Number our days" does not mean counting them anxiously; it means living with an honest awareness that our time is limited and precious. Moses, who has just described human life as fleeting grass that flourishes in the morning and is cut down by evening, prays that this sobering truth would not crush his people but teach them.
The purpose clause makes the aim clear: "that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." The point of remembering life's brevity is not despair but wisdom -- a deliberate turning of the heart toward what truly matters. When people forget that their days are limited, they drift, waste time, and chase trivial things. But when they remember, they begin to weigh their choices, invest in what lasts, and live with purpose. Notice that wisdom here is something we "apply our hearts" to; it takes intention and effort, and Moses asks God to teach it. The verse is a prayer that the hard fact of mortality would become a teacher, pressing us toward a life that is thoughtful, God-centered, and well spent rather than squandered.
In the Original Language
"Number" renders the Hebrew manah, to count or appoint; "apply our hearts" uses lev, the heart understood as the seat of mind, will, and decision, not merely emotion.
