What Does Revelation 1:9 Mean?
The vision proper now begins, and John tells us where he was when it came. He does not claim rank but calls himself their brother and companion, sharing in tribulation, in the kingdom, and in the patient endurance that is found in Jesus Christ. He was on Patmos, a small island used by Rome for exile, sent there because of the word of God and his witness to Jesus.
John writes not from comfort but from his own suffering, which is why his words can strengthen the suffering. Tribulation, kingdom, and patience belong together: the same Jesus who calls His people to endure also makes them citizens of His reign. Faithfulness had cost John his freedom, yet on that lonely shore the Lord met him. Often it is in such places, stripped of every other support, that heaven opens.
