Context

This great chorus of praise rises in heaven near the end of John's visions, celebrating God's triumph and the announcement of the marriage of the Lamb.

What Does Revelation 19:6 Mean?

Revelation 19:6 is heaven's thunderous shout of praise that the Lord God reigns supreme over all. John hears a sound like a vast multitude, like rushing waters, like mighty thunder -- imagery piling up to convey the overwhelming power and joy of the worship. The single cry that rises is "Alleluia," meaning "Praise the Lord."

The reason for this jubilation is declared simply: "the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." The word omnipotent affirms that God holds all power, and the verb "reigneth" announces that His kingdom has come in fullness. After the long visions of conflict, suffering, and the fall of all that opposed God, this is the triumphant declaration that He is, and always was, the rightful King. His reign is not in doubt and never was, but here it is celebrated as openly established and acknowledged. The thunderous volume of the praise matches the magnitude of the truth: the sovereign Lord governs all things and brings His purposes to their glorious end. This verse lifts the believer's heart in hope, assuring that no matter how dark the present may look, the final reality is the unshakable, joyful reign of God. The only fitting response is to join the song.

In the Original Language

"Alleluia" comes from the Hebrew "hallelu-yah," meaning "praise the LORD." "Omnipotent" is "pantokrator" (παντοκράτωρ), the all-powerful, all-ruling One.

Application

This verse calls believers to lift their hearts in confident praise, trusting that the all-powerful Lord reigns and will bring His purposes to a glorious end.
