These words follow God's declaration that He makes all things new, joining the announcement of completion with an open invitation to the thirsty.
What Does Revelation 21:6 Mean?
Revelation 21:6 is God's triumphant declaration that His work is complete, paired with a free offer of the water of life to all who thirst. "It is done" announces that everything God set out to accomplish has reached its fulfillment. The long story of redemption has arrived at its goal, and the renewed creation stands accomplished.
God again names Himself "Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end," the same title from the book's opening. He who began all things has brought them to their appointed completion; nothing has fallen outside His purpose. Then comes a gracious invitation: "I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely." The water of life pictures the satisfying, life-giving presence of God, offered to all who recognize their thirst. The word "freely" emphasizes that this gift cannot be earned or purchased; it is given out of God's generous heart to those who come. This verse joins majesty and mercy: the sovereign Lord who finishes all things stoops to offer life to the thirsty. To anyone aware of an inner longing nothing in this world can quench, the invitation stands open. Come, and receive the water of life.
In the Original Language
"It is done" is "gegonan" (γέγοναν), a perfect form meaning it has come to pass and stands accomplished. "Freely" is "dorean" (δωρεάν), as a gift, without cost.
