This promise comes amid the vision of the renewed creation, addressing the faithful believer who overcomes and describing the reward of inheritance and sonship.
What Does Revelation 21:7 Mean?
Revelation 21:7 is God's promise to the faithful overcomer -- an inheritance of all things and the cherished standing of being His own child. Throughout the book, "he that overcometh" describes the believer who remains faithful to Christ through trial and temptation. Here the final reward for such faithfulness is unveiled.
First, the overcomer "shall inherit all things" -- the believer is not merely spared judgment but made an heir, sharing in the fullness of the renewed creation. Inheritance is the language of family and belonging, not of wages earned. Second, and even more precious, comes the relational promise: "I will be his God, and he shall be my son." This is the language of intimate covenant, echoing the promise once given to David's royal line and now extended to all the faithful. To be called God's child is to be welcomed into the closest possible relationship with Him. This verse crowns the vision of the new creation with the deepest of all gifts -- not just a place in a renewed world, but a place in God's own family. For the believer who has held fast, the future is not only secure but tender: an inheritance shared, and a Father who claims them as His own.
In the Original Language
"Inherit" is "kleronomeo" (κληρονομέω), to receive as an heir. "Son" is "huios" (υἱός), denoting a recognized child with full standing in the family.
