Context

Continuing from the peace described in verse 1, Paul lists further blessings of justification: ongoing access to grace and joyful hope of sharing in God's glory.

What Does Romans 5:2 Mean?

Paul says that through Christ we have gained access by faith into the grace in which we now stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God's glory. The word "access" pictures being ushered into the presence of a king. Through Christ the believer is brought near and granted entry into a realm of grace -- not a fleeting visit but a settled place "wherein we stand." The image of standing conveys stability and security; this is solid ground beneath the believer's feet, established by what Christ has done.

From this secure footing flows joy. Paul says we "rejoice in hope of the glory of God." This hope is not wishful thinking but confident expectation, a forward look toward the glory God has prepared for His people. The believer's present standing in grace and future hope of glory belong together: reconciled now, anticipating fullness to come. Paul will go on in the next verses to say that this joy holds even in tribulation, because the same hope sustains the believer through hardship. For now, he sets the tone -- the Christian life is one of joyful confidence, rooted in grace already received and glory still to come, all through the access Christ provides.

In the Original Language

"Access" translates the Greek "prosagōgē," an introduction or admission into a royal presence. "Grace" renders "charis," unearned favor, and "rejoice" comes from "kauchaomai," to exult or boast with joy.

Application

Believers can approach God with confidence, standing on solid ground in His grace and looking forward with joyful hope rather than living in uncertainty about their standing.
