Opening Romans 8, this verse announces the freedom that answers the struggle of chapter 7. It launches Paul's celebrated description of life in the Spirit and the security of God's love.
What Does Romans 8:1 Mean?
Paul declares the glorious result of being in Christ: there is now no condemnation for those who belong to Him. After the agonizing struggle of chapter 7, this opening word of chapter 8 lands like sunrise after a long night. The word "therefore" connects it to everything Paul has argued -- justification by faith, deliverance through Christ. For the one who is "in Christ Jesus," the verdict of guilt no longer stands. The believer is freed from the dread of condemnation, not because the struggle has vanished, but because of their union with Christ.
The phrase "in Christ Jesus" is the key. To be in Christ is to be so joined to Him that His standing becomes the believer's standing. The condemnation sin deserves does not fall on those who are His. Paul adds a description of these people: they "walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" -- their lives are increasingly directed by God's Spirit rather than ruled by sinful impulse. This verse is one of the great comforts of Scripture, assuring the believer that their relationship with God no longer hangs under a cloud of judgment. The chapter that follows will unfold the freedom, sonship, and unshakable love that flow from this foundation.
In the Original Language
"Condemnation" translates the Greek "katakrima," a judicial sentence of guilt and its penalty. "Walk" renders "peripateō," to live and conduct oneself, and "Spirit" comes from "pneuma."
