What Does Romans 8:2 Mean?
Paul explains why there is no condemnation. He sets two "laws" or governing principles side by side: the law of the Spirit of life, and the law of sin and death. The second held him captive in chapter 7; the first has now broken its hold.
Freedom here is not merely a feeling but a change of governing power. Just as a higher force can lift what gravity holds down, the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus releases the soul once bound by sin. This liberty is given in Christ, who took our condition upon Himself, that the chains of death might be loosed and we might walk in newness of life.
