Within the love poems of the Song of Solomon, chapter 2 expresses the bride's delight in her beloved. This verse depicts being welcomed into a place of feasting and joy, covered openly by the beloved's love -- a celebration of love that honors, protects, and rejoices in the one who is cherished.
What Does Song of Solomon 2:4 Mean?
Song of Solomon 2:4 paints a picture of joyful, openly declared love: "He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love." The "banqueting house" -- literally a house of wine -- is a place of feasting, abundance, and celebration. To be brought there is to be welcomed into joy, lavished with good things, and made to feel honored and at home. The beloved does not merely tolerate her; he delights to bring her into a place of gladness.
The image of the "banner" is especially striking. A banner was a flag or standard raised high so that all could see it -- often used by armies to identify and rally a people. Here the banner flying over the beloved is "love." In other words, the one who loves her displays that love openly, proudly, for all to see; he claims her and shelters her under the public sign of his affection. There is nothing hidden or grudging about it. The verse celebrates love that protects, honors, and rejoices. Many readers have also found here a picture of the welcome God extends to His people, drawing them into the feast of His goodness and covering them with the banner of His love. To be loved like this is to be both safe and celebrated -- cherished under a love that is unashamed to be seen.
In the Original Language
