So that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs with the hope of eternal life.

What Does Titus 3:7 Mean?

Paul names the goal of all this saving work. Having been justified, set right with God, by His grace, we become heirs in keeping with the hope of eternal life. The mercy, washing, and outpoured Spirit of the previous verses lead here: to a settled standing before God and an inheritance yet to come.

The language of inheritance lifts our status to its height. We are not merely forgiven servants but heirs, those who will receive the fullness of eternal life as God's gift. Grace justifies us now and promises us glory ahead. For the reader, this gathers up the gospel's blessings into one bright hope. Made right with God by grace, we look forward as heirs to the eternal life Paul named at the letter's very start. The journey that began with God's mercy ends in an inheritance that cannot fade.

In the Original Language

dikaioo (δικαιόω), "justified" — to be declared righteous or set right, here by God's grace.
