What Does Zechariah 6:11 Mean?
With the silver and gold brought from Babylon, Zechariah is to make a crown and place it on the head of Joshua, the son of Josedech, the high priest who had led the returning people in worship. A priest is here adorned with the emblem of a king.
This is a startling act. In Israel the offices of king and priest were kept apart, yet here they meet on one man's head in a deliberate sign. The crowning points beyond Joshua himself to one who will truly join the two, a coming figure who will reign and intercede at once. The gift of exiles becomes a prophecy in gold.
In the Original Language
atarah (עֲטָרָה), 'crown' -- a royal diadem, here set upon a priest as a sign of offices joined.
