What Does Zechariah 9:5 Mean?
The oracle now sweeps south to the Philistine plain. Ashkelon, Gaza, and Ekron, ancient rivals of Israel, see the mighty fall of Tyre and are seized with fear and sorrow. Whatever they had counted on, their expectation, collapses into shame; Gaza loses her king and Ashkelon her people.
When the secure are shaken, the watching world trembles too, for false confidence everywhere shares the same foundation. These cities had long opposed God's people, and now their hope fails them. There is a warning in their dismay, but also a deeper note: the God who judges is clearing the ground, for the very next breath of this chapter will speak of a King who comes not to destroy but to save.
