What Does Zechariah 9:6 Mean?
Ashdod, another of the five Philistine cities, will be settled by a people of foreign and uncertain stock, a sign that the old proud population has been displaced. The LORD declares plainly His purpose: to cut off the pride of the Philistines, the arrogance that had defined them for centuries.
Pride is named here as the true target. It was not merely Philistine power but Philistine self-exaltation that God moved against. Scripture returns again and again to this theme, that the LORD humbles the haughty. The verse invites self-examination more than triumph over an old enemy: the pride that resists God in any human heart is the very thing He purposes, in mercy as much as judgment, to bring low.
