Peter quotes the prophet Joel during his Pentecost sermon, explaining the visible outpouring of the Holy Spirit to a bewildered crowd in Jerusalem.
What Does Acts 2:21 Mean?
Acts 2:21 is a sweeping promise of salvation -- anyone, without exception, who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Peter speaks this on the Day of Pentecost, quoting the prophet Joel as he explains the rushing wind, the tongues of fire, and the disciples speaking in many languages. The crowd was confused and even accused them of being drunk. Peter answers by anchoring the moment in Scripture: what they are seeing is the outpouring of God's Spirit that the prophets foretold.
The heart of the verse is the word "whosoever." There are no conditions of nationality, status, or past life attached to it. The invitation is universal, thrown open to every person who hears. To "call on the name of the Lord" is more than speaking words -- it is a turning of the whole self toward God in trust and dependence, appealing to Him for rescue. The Greek epikaleo carries the sense of invoking, appealing to, crying out to someone for help. And the promise attached is absolute: such a person "shall be saved" -- the Greek sozo, meaning to be rescued, delivered, made whole. This single sentence becomes the seed for the entire sermon that follows, in which Peter will tell the crowd exactly who this Lord is and how to respond to Him.
In the Original Language
The Greek "epikaleo" (call upon) means to invoke or appeal to for help, while "sozo" (saved) means to rescue, deliver, or make whole.
