Paul cites the foundational word that husband and wife become one flesh.

What Does Ephesians 5:31 Mean?

Paul reaches back to the first words spoken over marriage: 'a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife.' Marriage forms a new and primary bond, a leaving and a cleaving. From the beginning, it was established as a profound union.

'They two shall be one flesh.' Two distinct persons become, in marriage, a true unity. This oneness is the deep reality behind all Paul has said about husbands loving their wives as themselves. The original design of marriage, spoken at creation, underlies and illuminates the whole of his counsel.
