What Does Galatians 3:6 Mean?
Paul reaches back to Abraham, the father of the faithful, to anchor his argument in Scripture itself. Abraham believed God, and that faith was credited to him as righteousness. He was accepted not for works he performed but for trust he placed in God's promise.
This is no new teaching, then, but the oldest pattern of all. Long before the law was given, righteousness came by faith. Paul shows that the gospel of grace is not a departure from the Scriptures but their deepest theme, written into the story of God's friend Abraham.
