God promises to shake all nations, so that ‘the desire of all nations’ shall come, and He will fill the house with glory.

What Does Haggai 2:7 Mean?

Following the cosmic shaking of verse 6, God turns to the nations. The treasures and the longing of the peoples will be drawn toward this house, and God Himself will fill it with glory — a glory not measured by gold but by His own presence. The promise far outstrips anything the small structure could hold on its own.

The 'desire of all nations' points beyond gold to the deepest longing of the peoples, the hope toward which all human yearning reaches. This humble house is bound up with God's purposes for the whole world, and the glory that matters is not architectural but personal — the presence of God Himself, who fills His house and satisfies the desire of every nation. What the small builders could never supply, God promises to bring by His own coming.

In the Original Language

chemdath (חֶמְדַת), 'desire' — that which is precious or longed for, the treasure and deep longing toward which the nations are drawn.
