God extends the promise of His Spirit even to servants and handmaids, reaching every rank of His people.

What Does Joel 2:29 Mean?

God presses the promise even further. Not only sons and daughters, old and young, but also the servants and the handmaids, those of lowest social standing, will receive the outpoured Spirit. In a world ordered by rank, this is striking: God's gift overlooks no class. The Spirit will rest on the servant as surely as on the free.

This sweeping inclusion reveals the heart of God, who is no respecter of persons. The new age He promises levels the old distinctions before His grace; what matters is not station but belonging to Him. The fulfillment at Pentecost and after confirmed it, as the Spirit fell on people of every kind who called on the Lord. There is deep comfort here for the lowly and overlooked: God's greatest gift, His own Spirit, is poured out on all who are His, and no one is too small or too low to receive it.
