The army moves without jostling, each in its lane, pressing forward even through weapons unharmed.

What Does Joel 2:8 Mean?

The unnatural order continues. None of them crowds or thrusts against another; each keeps to his own path. Even when they fall upon the sword or press through defenses, they are not wounded or stopped. The defenders' weapons make no difference. The advance is seamless, untroubled, and unbroken.

Joel describes a threat that human resistance simply cannot deter. Swords that would scatter an ordinary foe accomplish nothing here. The prophet strips away every false hope so that the people will look in the only direction that can help. When no weapon and no wall avails, the heart is forced upward to God. This relentless picture is not meant to crush the people into despair but to turn them, for the God who permits such an army is the same God who, when they cry out, will say, Fear not, and do great things on their behalf.
