The angel's central declaration to the shepherds outside Bethlehem, identifying the newborn child with three titles and locating His birth in the city of David.
What Does Luke 2:11 Mean?
This is the heart of the angel's message: the child born in Bethlehem is the long-awaited Saviour. In a single verse, the angel gives three titles that together reveal who this baby is. He is a Saviour -- the one who rescues and delivers. He is Christ -- the Anointed One, the Messiah promised throughout the Scriptures. And He is the Lord -- the rightful sovereign over all.
The setting deepens the meaning. The child is born "in the city of David," Bethlehem, the hometown of King David, fulfilling the prophecy that the promised ruler would come from there (Micah 5:2). The angel says He is born "unto you," addressing the shepherds directly -- this Saviour belongs to ordinary people, not merely to kings. And the words "this day" mark the moment as the turning point of history; the hope of generations has arrived. Each title invites a response. As Saviour, He meets our deepest need. As Christ, He fulfills God's ancient promises. As Lord, He calls for our trust and allegiance. The shepherds, hearing this, would go to see for themselves. The verse still issues that same invitation: the Saviour has come, and He has come for you.
In the Original Language
Three titles appear: soter (Saviour), Christos (anointed one, Messiah), and Kyrios (Lord). Together they identify the child as deliverer, promised king, and sovereign.
