Paul is contrasting life according to the flesh with life according to the Spirit. This verse summarizes the outcome of each mindset within his teaching on walking in the Spirit.
What Does Romans 8:6 Mean?
Paul contrasts two ways of thinking and where each leads: a mind fixed on the flesh ends in death, while a mind fixed on the Spirit brings life and peace. This is not merely about isolated thoughts but about the whole orientation of the mind -- what a person values, pursues, and sets their heart upon. To be "carnally minded" is to live with one's attention captured by sinful impulse and self-centered desire. Paul says plainly that this path leads to death, the loss of true life and separation from God.
The alternative is to be "spiritually minded," with the mind shaped and directed by God's Spirit. This yields "life and peace" -- not just survival, but a flourishing wholeness and the settled rest of being rightly related to God. Paul is showing that the inner direction of our thinking has real consequences. The Spirit-led mind finds the life and peace the flesh can never provide. This verse calls believers to pay attention to where their thoughts dwell, because the mind set on the Spirit experiences the very life and peace that the gospel promises. The battle for a transformed life is fought, in large part, in the orientation of the mind.
In the Original Language
"Minded" translates the Greek "phronēma," the mindset, way of thinking, and orientation. "Life" renders "zōē," and "peace" comes from "eirēnē," wholeness and reconciled well-being.
