The Best Accountability and Internet Filtering Apps
Screen accountability, content filtering, and recovery programs - what each one actually blocks, and what it cannot.
These apps do two genuinely different jobs, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake here. Accountability software reports what you did to a person you have chosen - it does not stop you. Filtering software blocks content before you reach it, and usually reports nothing to anyone. Covenant Eyes, Ever Accountable and Accountable2You are primarily accountability; Canopy, Safe Surfer, Plucky Filter and Tech Lockdown are primarily filters. Several do both, less well than the specialists.
The constraint nobody advertises is iOS. Apple does not permit an app to see inside other apps, so screenshot-based monitoring on iPhone is generally limited to Safari, with everything else covered by DNS-level detection instead. Every vendor in this category works around that differently, and the workarounds are where the real differences live - so read the platform notes before the feature list.
Prices here are higher than most app categories because these are ongoing services with real infrastructure behind them, and because the audience is motivated. Expect $10-20/month for accountability, less for pure DNS filtering. A few are free.

What is the difference between accountability software and a filter?
Accountability software reports your activity to a person you nominate - it relies on relationship rather than restriction. A filter blocks content before it loads and usually reports to nobody. Accountability suits an adult who wants to be known; filtering suits a device you want protected regardless of who is holding it. Many households need both, which is why several products bundle them.
Do these apps work properly on iPhone?
Partially, and every vendor is constrained the same way. iOS does not let one app see inside another, so screenshot monitoring is typically restricted to Safari while other apps are covered by DNS-level domain detection. That means an iPhone is meaningfully less monitorable than an Android device or a desktop. Vendors that are candid about this in their own documentation are the ones to trust.
Can these be uninstalled by the person being monitored?
Usually yes, and the good ones treat that as a feature rather than a flaw: they send an immediate uninstall alert to your accountability partner. Tamper prevention varies a lot - some products offer supervised-device or MDM configurations that make removal genuinely hard, which matters more for a child than for a consenting adult.
Is there a free accountability or filtering app?
Safe Surfer has a free tier, and Plucky Filter is free. Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for Families is free DNS-level filtering, though it is not a Christian product and reports to nobody. Which is best for a family with children?
A parental-control product rather than an accountability one - Canopy, Qustodio, Kidslox or Bark are built for a parent managing a child, with age-appropriate controls and location features.
