What Does 1 John 3:14 Mean?
John offers a ground of assurance. We know we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren. Love is the sign of new life, while the one who does not love abides still in death.
The movement from death to life is the great change the gospel works, and it leaves a mark: love for God's people. Where this love is present, it testifies that spiritual life has begun. Its absence shows a heart still in death's domain. John gives this not to breed anxiety but assurance.
