Peter urges believers to be diligent in confirming their calling and election, promising that those who do these things will not stumble.

What Does 2 Peter 1:10 Mean?

Drawing his exhortation to a head, Peter calls his readers "brethren" and urges diligence — the same eager effort from verse 5 — to make their "calling and election sure." God's call and choosing come first; the believer's task is to confirm them, to make them firm and settled through a life that bears the qualities just listed.

God's initiative and the believer's response stand together here. The calling and election are God's; the diligence to make them sure is ours. Peter does not pit one against the other. The promise is bracing: "if ye do these things, ye shall never fall." A life that keeps adding faith, virtue, and love to itself becomes steady, secure, unlikely to stumble into ruin. Assurance is not found by gazing inward at our own certainty, but by walking forward in the qualities God supplies. The path of obedience is the path of stability.

In the Original Language

ekloge (ἐκλογή), 'election' — God's act of choosing; Peter pairs it with the believer's diligence to confirm it.
