Colossians 3:2 Meaning and Explanation

The phrase set your affection reaches deeper than passing thoughts. The Greek word covers the whole bent of a person, what we ponder, what we treasure, the direction the mind keeps drifting when it is left alone. Paul invites us to aim that inner compass upward, toward the things above. The earthly things are good in themselves, yet they pass, and a heart anchored only to them will rise and fall with them. He calls our deepest attention to what lasts.

And the things above are real and concrete, the realities of the place where Christ reigns. To set the mind there is to let Jesus become the steady center of our thinking, the One our hearts return to under the noise of the day. He is freeing us to hold the world He made lightly, with love for it intact, because our truest treasure is kept safe with Him, above where moth and rust cannot reach.

The command does not float free; it rests on the verses that bracket it. Ye are risen with Christ, Paul has just said, and your life is hid with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3). To mind the things above is therefore not escapism but homing, the instinct of a life whose center of gravity has already moved. Where the treasure is, there the heart follows (Matthew 6:21), and our treasure is a Person seated at the Father's right hand. The upward gaze does not empty our hands of earthly duty; it steadies them, because we no longer clutch the world for a meaning it was never made to bear. We tend the earth freely, precisely because our life is kept safe elsewhere, with Him.
