Context

This verse concludes Jesus' teaching on earthly versus heavenly treasure, revealing the deep principle behind it: the location of our treasure determines the orientation of our hearts.

What Does Matthew 6:21 Mean?

Jesus states a piercing truth about human nature: where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Our hearts inevitably follow whatever we prize most. This single sentence explains why the choice between earthly and heavenly treasure, just described, matters so profoundly. It is not merely about money -- it is about the direction of the heart itself.

The word "heart" here means the center of who we are -- our affections, desires, loyalties, and will. Jesus observes that these are bound up with whatever we genuinely treasure. What we value most captures our thoughts, shapes our priorities, and draws our love. If we invest our treasure in earthly things, our hearts will be tethered to the earth, anxious over what we might lose. If we invest in heaven, our hearts will be drawn upward toward God and the things that last. This is why the location of our treasure is so decisive: it determines the orientation of our whole inner life. The verse functions both as a diagnosis and an invitation. As a diagnosis, it lets us examine what we truly love by noticing where our treasure -- and therefore our heart -- actually lies. As an invitation, it urges us to deliberately set our treasure on God and His kingdom, knowing our hearts will faithfully follow wherever we send our treasure ahead.

In the Original Language

The Greek thesauros, "treasure," is what one prizes and stores up. "Heart," kardia, denotes the inner center of affections, will, and desire -- which Jesus says follows wherever our treasure lies.

Application

Examine where your treasure actually lies to see what you truly love, and deliberately set it on God and His kingdom, knowing your heart will follow.
