The proud king's character is laid bare. He speaks great words against the Most High, wears out the saints, and thinks to change the sacred times and laws -- setting himself in the place of God to redefine what is holy. The saints are given into his hand for a time and times and the dividing of time, a measured, limited span.
This is arrogance reaching its height: not only oppressing God's people but presuming to alter what God has fixed. Yet notice the leash. He acts only until an appointed limit, a period God Himself has shortened and bounded. The faithful are not abandoned to him forever. The very verse that describes the worst of the persecution writes its expiration into the same breath. His hour is set; the saints' deliverance is surer than his power.
