Context

This verse follows God's intervention to spare Isaac and the provision of a ram for the offering, as Abraham names the place in response.

What Does Genesis 22:14 Mean?

Genesis 22:14 means that after God provided a ram to take Isaac's place, Abraham gave the mountain a name memorializing that provision: "Jehovah-jireh," the LORD will provide. The name turns a place of testing into a lasting monument to God's faithful supply in the moment of greatest need.

At the height of the trial, when the knife was raised, God Himself provided a substitute, and a ram caught in a thicket became the offering. Abraham's name for the place captures the lesson burned into his heart: the LORD sees the need and provides for it. The added saying, "In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen," became a proverb among the people, a reminder that God's provision is most clearly seen in the very place of trial. The Hebrew behind "provide" and "seen" is the same root -- to see and to see-to are bound together; God sees the need and answers it. This verse encourages every reader who is climbing a difficult mountain to remember that the place of testing can become the place where God's provision is most fully revealed.

In the Original Language

The Hebrew name "Yahweh Yireh" (the LORD will see / provide) is formed from "ra'ah" (to see), the same root used for both provision and the seeing on the mount.

Application

When you face a hard trial, trust that the place of your testing can become the very place where you see God's provision most clearly.
