Context

This verse continues John's prologue, immediately after the declaration that all things were made through the Word. It introduces the paired themes of life and light that the Gospel develops throughout.

What Does John 1:4 Mean?

John 1:4 says that life itself was present in the Word, and that this life became the light of humanity. Having credited the Word with making all things, John now explains where that life originates: not in creation, but in the Creator. The Word does not merely possess life; life is in him as its source.

Two of John's great themes -- life and light -- are introduced together here and will run through the entire Gospel. "Life" (Greek zoe) means far more than biological existence; it is the deep, abundant life that comes from God and that Jesus later promises to those who follow him. "Light" stands for revelation, truth, and the knowledge of God that drives away spiritual darkness. By linking them, John says that the life found in the Word is exactly what illuminates the human heart and mind. People grope in the dark not for lack of intelligence but for lack of this light. The one through whom we were made is also the one who shows us how to live, and in him the two are inseparable -- to find life in Christ is to find light, and to walk in his light is to share his life.

In the Original Language

The Greek "en auto zoe en" means "in him was life." The word "zoe" denotes life in its fullest, God-given sense, while "phos" (light) signifies revelation and the knowledge of God.

Application

When life feels dim or directionless, turn to the One in whom life and light reside. He offers not only existence but understanding for the way ahead.
