John 2:5 Meaning and Explanation

Mary does not hear his answer as a refusal. She has pondered who her son is since the angel first spoke (Luke 2:19, 51), and she turns to the servants with settled confidence that he will act in his own way and time. These are the last recorded words of Mary in Scripture.

They could stand as the motto of every disciple: whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. She does not say understand it first, or approve it first — filling waterpots will seem pointless to servants who need wine. Obedience often begins before explanation. Those who simply do what he says, even in small and puzzling tasks, are the ones who stand closest when his power is revealed.
