Jesus speaks to those beginning to believe, calling them to abide in His teaching. The crowd assumes they are already free; Jesus points to a deeper slavery -- sin.
What Does John 8:32 Mean?
In one sentence: continuing in Jesus' word leads to knowing the truth, and that truth sets a person free. The promise has a condition just before it: "If ye continue in my word" (John 8:31) -- truth is known by abiding, not merely agreeing.
The freedom Jesus means is freedom from sin's bondage (John 8:34), not freedom to do whatever we please. Truth here is not just information but a Person and His word that liberates from the inside out.
In the Original Language
The Greek "aletheia" (truth) is reality as it actually is, unveiled in Jesus. "Eleutheroo" means to set free or liberate -- release from bondage.

Application
