What Does Luke 11:28 Mean?
Jesus receives the woman's blessing and lifts it higher: yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. The blessing of nearness to him is opened to everyone who will hear and obey.
This does not diminish his mother -- Luke has shown her as the very model of such hearing, who said be it unto me according to thy word, and kept these things in her heart (Luke 1:38; 2:19). It means the deepest kinship with Jesus is not of blood but of obedience. The blessing the woman admired from a distance is offered to her, and to us.
