What Does Luke 7:49 Mean?
The other guests react as the scribes did when the paralytic was healed (Luke 5:21): they murmur within themselves, "Who is this that forgiveth sins also?" To pronounce sins forgiven is to exercise a prerogative belonging to God, against whom all sin is finally committed.
Their question is the right one, even asked in skepticism — Luke's whole Gospel keeps pressing it: who, then, is this? The scene answers by deed: He who reads hearts, welcomes sinners, and remits sin with a word is the One in whom God has visited His people (v. 16). Every reader must finish the guests' sentence. The woman at His feet already has.
