After His temptation and the imprisonment of John the Baptist, Jesus settles in Capernaum and begins His public ministry in Galilee. This verse summarizes the central message He proclaimed.
What Does Matthew 4:17 Mean?
Jesus opens His public ministry with the same urgent call John the Baptist gave: repent, because the kingdom of heaven is near. The phrase "from that time" marks a turning point -- the temptations are behind Him, John has been imprisoned, and now Jesus steps forward to proclaim the message that will define His mission. His first recorded word of public preaching is a summons to turn.
By echoing John's words, Jesus shows continuity with the herald who prepared His way, yet now the One announced is the One speaking. The kingdom is no longer merely approaching from a distance; it draws near in His very presence. To repent is to change direction, to turn from sin and toward God, and this turning is the fitting response to the nearness of God's reign. Matthew presents this verse as the headline of all that follows -- the teaching, healing, and calling of disciples that fill the chapters ahead all unfold under this banner. The message is strikingly simple and deeply demanding. It does not begin with comfort or with rules, but with an invitation to reorient the whole of life around the King who has come. That invitation has never expired; it meets every reader with the same freshness it carried on the shores of Galilee.
In the Original Language
The Greek metanoeite, "repent," calls for a change of mind that reshapes the life. "Kingdom of heaven," basileia ton ouranon, denotes God's reign and rule breaking into the world.
