Paul received mercy so that his rescue might display Christ's patience as a pattern for all who would later believe.

What Does 1 Timothy 1:16 Mean?

Paul sees a purpose in his own salvation. In him, the worst of sinners, Christ put his patience on full display for all to see.

His story becomes a pattern, a living example meant to encourage everyone who comes after. If Christ bore with Paul to the point of saving him, then anyone who believes can hope for the same everlasting life. Paul's past becomes a doorway of hope for others.

In the Original Language

makrothumia (μακροθυμία), 'longsuffering' -- patient endurance that holds back from anger and waits in mercy.
