Daniel 1:8

Daniel 1:8

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Context

Daniel and other youths from Judah have been taken captive to Babylon and chosen for royal training, including a diet from the king's own table.

What Does Daniel 1:8 Mean?

Daniel decided ahead of time, before any pressure came, that he would not defile himself with the king's rich food and wine. The phrase "purposed in his heart" is the heart of the verse: faithfulness here is not a sudden reaction but a settled conviction reached in advance. A teenager carried far from home, renamed, and enrolled in the king's academy could have surrendered his conscience entirely. Instead he drew one quiet line, anchored in the laws of his fathers, and held it.

Notice how he held it. Daniel does not denounce the king or stage a rebellion; he "requested" -- he asks respectfully, working within the system while keeping his integrity intact. The food likely violated dietary commands or had been offered to idols, so the issue was loyalty to God, not mere preference. The verse models the difference between compromise and contempt: Daniel stays gracious and submissive in everything that does not cost him his obedience, and immovable in the one thing that would. Conviction settled early, expressed humbly, becomes the seed of a life that nothing in Babylon could bend.

In the Original Language

The verb behind "purposed" (Hebrew sim) means to set, place, or appoint -- Daniel literally set the matter upon his heart, fixing it like something laid down deliberately.

Application

Decide where your lines are before temptation arrives, and learn to hold them with respect rather than rebellion.
