Context

Opening chapter 16's cluster of proverbs about God's sovereignty over human plans, this verse invites the reader to entrust their efforts to the LORD.

What Does Proverbs 16:3 Mean?

When you entrust your work to God, He steadies and confirms your plans. This proverb offers both an invitation and a promise. The invitation: "Commit thy works unto the LORD." The promise that follows: "thy thoughts shall be established." To hand one's efforts over to God is to find one's plans made firm.

The word "commit" pictures rolling a heavy burden off oneself and onto another -- literally entrusting one's works to the LORD as one might roll a load onto stronger shoulders. This is more than a quick prayer before acting; it is a genuine handing over of one's labors, ambitions, and outcomes into God's care. It involves both surrender and trust: releasing the anxious need to control results while relying on God to oversee them. The promise, "thy thoughts shall be established," means that one's plans and purposes will be made stable and brought to a good end. There is a subtle exchange here: we give God our works, and He gives our thoughts firmness and direction. This does not guarantee that every human plan will succeed exactly as conceived, for the surrounding verses make clear that the LORD directs the steps. Rather, when our efforts are truly committed to Him, He aligns and steadies our thinking, shaping our purposes toward what is good. The path to stable plans runs through trustful surrender.

In the Original Language

"Commit" renders galal, to roll -- to roll one's burdens onto the LORD. "Established" is kun, to be firm, fixed, or made stable and secure.

Application

Genuinely entrust your work, ambitions, and outcomes to God, releasing anxious control and trusting Him to steady and direct your plans.
