Our picks
Best overall
Bible App for Kids
Free, no ads, no in-app purchases, animated and narrated for pre-readers, and properly maintained by YouVersion. The safe default.
Best book
The Jesus Storybook Bible
The best children's Bible in print: every story is shown pointing to Christ rather than flattened into a moral lesson. Around $17.
Best for ages 5-9
Superbook
Free, with a genuinely well-produced animated series and games attached. Holds attention without ads or purchase prompts.
Best for older kids
The Action Bible
A graphic-novel Bible that eight-to-twelves read voluntarily, which is the only metric that matters at that age. Around $20.
Best audio
Adventures in Odyssey Club
An enormous audio-drama library, and audio drama is unusually effective with 8-12s - especially in the car.
How to choose
Bible App for Kids is the best starting point and it is free: an animated, narrated walk through the major Bible stories, designed for pre-readers, with no ads and no in-app purchases. From YouVersion, so it is well maintained. For most families with children under about seven, that plus a story Bible in print is the whole answer.
The print recommendation matters more than the app recommendation, and it is worth being direct about that. The Jesus Storybook Bible (~$17) is the best children's Bible in print because it does something most do not: it consistently shows how each story points to Christ, rather than reducing each one to a moral lesson about being brave or kind. For older children who want something that reads like a graphic novel, The Action Bible (~$20) holds attention far better than any app.
By age, roughly: under 5, Bible App for Kids and a board-book story Bible. Ages 5-9, Superbook (free, animated series with genuine production budget) and The Jesus Storybook Bible. Ages 8-12, The Action Bible and Adventures in Odyssey Club - the audio-drama library is enormous and audio drama is unusually good at holding this age group. Ages 10+, most children are ready for a real Bible; a plain reader app plus a study Bible aimed at teens does more than anything in the kids category.
Two practical cautions. First, check for ads and in-app purchases specifically, not just the price. A free app with ad placements is not free in the way that matters when a six-year-old is holding the phone; Bible App for Kids and Superbook are both clean, but "free" elsewhere in this category sometimes means ad-supported. Second, screen time substitution: the apps that hold attention best are the ones built like games and shows, which is exactly why they hold attention. That is fine, but it means an app is not automatically the more wholesome option compared with a book.
Daily Bible Trivia is worth a mention as the highest-rated app in this set, though it suits older children and family play rather than young children learning stories for the first time.
What is genuinely missing in this category, across the whole market: almost nothing well made exists for ages 10-13 specifically. Children move from picture-book apps to adult tools with very little in between, and no app we reviewed fills that gap well.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Bible app for kids?
Bible App for Kids, from YouVersion. It is free, has no ads and no in-app purchases, and presents the major Bible stories as animated, narrated scenes suitable for children who cannot yet read. Superbook is the better choice once children are around five and want something closer to a show, and it is also free.
Are Christian kids apps really free?
Bible App for Kids and Superbook genuinely are - no ads, no purchase prompts. Elsewhere in this category "free" sometimes means ad-supported, which is a meaningfully different thing when a young child is holding the device. Check the App Store listing for both in-app purchases and advertising before handing it over.
What is the best children's Bible?
The Jesus Storybook Bible, for ages roughly 3-8. It is the best-written children's Bible in print and it consistently connects each story to Christ instead of turning it into a lesson about being brave or kind. For 8-12s, The Action Bible is the one children actually pick up on their own, because it reads like a graphic novel.
What Bible app is best for a 10-year-old?
Honestly, most ten-year-olds are ready to move past the kids category - a plain Bible reader like YouVersion plus a study Bible written for teens will serve them better than an app built for pre-readers. This age band is the real gap in the market: there is very little made well for 10-13s specifically, in apps or in print.
Is Superbook free?
Yes. The Superbook app is free, with the animated series, games and a Bible reading plan included, and no purchase prompts. It is funded by CBN, which is why there is no paywall around content that would otherwise be expensive to produce.
What are the best Christian shows for kids?
Superbook and Minno are the two most substantial options - Minno is a subscription streaming service built specifically for Christian children's programming, and Superbook is free. Yippee TV is a further alternative. Adventures in Odyssey is audio rather than video and is the strongest pick for car journeys with 8-12s.
How do I teach my kids the Bible without an app?
A story Bible read aloud at a set time does more than any app, and The Jesus Storybook Bible is written to be read aloud in about five minutes per story. Habits of the Household and Give Them Grace are both useful books for parents on building the rhythm. The apps are best understood as a supplement to that, not a replacement.
Do these apps have ads or track my child?
Bible App for Kids and Superbook are both ad-free and backed by organisations without an advertising model. Elsewhere, check each App Store listing's privacy card and in-app purchase list - it is the fastest reliable way to see what a kids app collects and sells, and it is more trustworthy than marketing copy.
